Ah, December. A month for twinkling lights, warm drinks, and — if you’re Donald J. Trump — casually suggesting that a major American news network should be forced into a hostage sale because it hurt your feelings. Nothing says “Merry Christmas” quite like an aspiring autocrat demanding control over the national narrative.

But let’s not get ahead of ourselves.

Let’s savor this moment like a fine French Roquefort: sharp, funky, and a little disturbing.

The Authoritarian Christmas List

While the rest of America is buying gifts, Trump is out here making a wish list straight out of a Banana Republic (not the store — the collapsing democracy version):

  1. CNN sold to someone he likesPreferably a billionaire who thinks the First Amendment is optional.
  2. Journalists punished for reporting factsYou know — treasonous activities like “quoting him accurately.”
  3. A media landscape that functions like North Korean state TV“Tonight’s headline: Trump Is a Genius and Everything Is Perfect, Thank You for Asking.”

If you’re thinking, This feels a little fascist, congratulations. Your democracy alarm is functioning properly. Many Americans had theirs disconnected sometime around 2016.

Why CNN? Why Now?

Simple: CNN committed the cardinal sin of journalism — not adoring him.

They reported on:

  • His indictments
  • His court losses
  • His threats
  • His incoherent rants
  • His love letters to strongmen
  • His inability to identify trees by their color

And in Trump World, if a reporter refuses to purr on command, you don’t ignore them — you call for their company to be sold like you’re auctioning livestock.

A President Who Wants to Control the Press? Totally Normal… in Autocracies.

Let’s be VERY clear for those in the back:

Presidents do not get to decide who owns news networks.

Presidents do not get to threaten businesses for unfavorable coverage.

Presidents do not get to dismantle the free press because it complicates their personal branding.

Unless, of course, we’re no longer talking about a president…

but a man who desperately wants to be an untouchable strongman with his own personal media empire.

You know — like the guys he admires:

  • Putin
  • Orbán
  • Erdoğan
  • Kim Jong-Un (minus the symmetrical haircut)

The Real Reason for the Tantrum

Trump doesn’t want CNN sold because it’s “fake news.”

He wants CNN sold because it reports the news — which is deeply offensive to him.

He wants a world where every camera is pointed at him, every chyron praises him, and every journalist asks only one question:

“Sir, how do you stay so brilliant?”

Because nothing terrifies him more than independent thought, facts he can’t control, or women with signs at the Indiana Statehouse named Julie Bolejack.

So What Do We Do?

We:

  • Support independent journalism
  • Read widely
  • Call out authoritarian nonsense when we see it
  • And refuse to normalize a man trying to bully the free press into submission like a petty dictator with a wi-fi connection

Trump doesn’t want CNN sold for America.

He wants it sold for himself.

And the moment we say, “Well maybe he has a point,”

we’re not living in a democracy anymore —

we’re living in the Trump Channel ™, broadcasting 24/7 from the bunker.
