Dear Esteemed Readers,
If you are reading this, congratulations—you have survived yet another week of what is turning out for most of us to be a shambolic new year, and I, for one, think that deserves a medal. Or at the very least, a hot beverage and an extra hour in bed.
I do not know what this past week has been like for you, but I assume it involved, at minimum, a degree of confusion, misplaced optimism, and an overwhelming urge to run away to a remote cabin with no WiFi. The beginning of the year, much like assembling a piece of furniture without instructions, is an exercise in misplaced confidence. We march into it full of resolutions, determination, and hopeful lists—only to be met with an immediate and unavoidable reality: the world remains as chaotic as ever, and we are still expected to participate in it.
But today, dear reader, I grant you permission—no, I insist—that you set aside all thoughts of productivity, self-improvement, and whatever catastrophe the world has hurled at you in the past six days. Today is not the day for worrying. Today is a day for indulging in whatever small pleasure you can muster.
If that means staying in pajamas until an unreasonable hour, so be it. If it means consuming an inadvisable amount of baked goods, I salute you. If it means watching a television show so ridiculous that your ancestors would shake their heads in shame, then by all means, lean in. The world will still be in shambles tomorrow, but today, we rest, regroup, and engage in the fine art of doing whatever brings us the most comfort.
As Twain might have said (or at least should have said if he had any sense), “Never put off until tomorrow what you can completely ignore today.”
And so, I implore you: let the lists wait. Let the emails pile up. Let the laundry remain a distant, future-you problem. For today, you have but one mission—to enjoy yourself in the best way you know how.
The world will still be there tomorrow, and I am confident it will continue being its usual, absurd self. But for today? Just breathe.
